How about checking out some great artworks while you're discovering Lisboa? Here is a tour around some of the best contemporary art galleries spread out across the city, and a few highlighted picks. You'll find places that work in the fields of painting, illustration, sculpture, streetart, installation, video and photography, with works from both local and international artists. Here they are below:
This is a small (it is actually a corridor!) but plentyful gallery dedicated to photography. Pequena Galeria is well known in the field as a space of exhibition, collectionism, investigation and intervention, constantly looking into the different ways we can think of contemporary photography today. It is located very close to Cais do Sodré, pay them a visit!
Zé dos Bois is a multi-faceted cultural association, bar and venue, with a programme that ranges from live shows, to meetings, book launches, artist resiencies and of course exhibitions. It explores the many branches of contemporary art, experimentation and emerging languages. Look for it on your trips around Bairro Alto!
A big warehouse turned into an art gallery that focuses on visual, urban and street art, this is Galeria Underdogs. It serves as a creative center for this branch of art, organizes artist residencies and provides the artists its famous open-space environment to exhibit their work. A great spot to check out around Marvila.
The name for this gallery comes from the justaposition of the words 'world citizenship', which already tells something about their concept. Wozen is a gallery, residency and studio all at the same time, promoting artists with varied artistic languages. They also organize occasional workshops, artist meetings and other events. It is located near Santos, in Rua das Janelas Verdes.
Remember some of these places offer more than exhibitions! You may want to complete your visit with a creative talk, enjoy a live show or even get a few drinks. Whatever it is, you will have a good time. See you at the gallery!
