About Saryan & his works

Martiros Saryan was one of the greatest Armenian painters, who created his works at the beginning of the 18th century. He started to paint from the age of sixteen and he continued untill his retirement. After studying in Moscow for several years, Saryan returned back to his motherland. The paintings that were born thanks to his emotions and feelings towards Armenia, got a fantastic feedback from the audience of the exhibition he organized in Moscow. Like all the modern artists of that time, Saryan was also into impressionism. However, along with that, he was also creating his own style. Saryan was sure that art has to call people to live and struggle, to make them believe and hope, that’s why he started to draw flowers and paintings in bright colors. The more wars were taking place, the brighter and more colorful his paintings became. Thus, he was trying to bring some kind of light and hope to his motherland.

Martiros Saryan House-Museum

The House-Museum named after him was established in 1967 by the decision of the Government of Armenia. It represents a place where Saryan used to live and work. The design of the building belongs to Alexander Tamanyan, who was a chief architect of Yerevan. In the House-museum, there are around 270 of his works, among them the paintings and graphics. Besides the works presented here, there are also hundreds of his works spread in different galleries worldwide. Behind the bright colors, you can feel Saryan’s love towards his motherland, that somehow is present in almost all the paintings. The entrance fee without a guide is just 2 euros, which is nothing in comparison to what you can see.

Saryan’s park & street

He became a much-liked artist, so a park was named after him later on. Saryan’s park is a place near the Opera and Ballet Theater of Armenia, where lthe ocal artists sell their paintings. It is a nice spot to stop by. Yerevan also has a street named after Saryan. Besides that, his portrait is stamped on the Armenian 20.000 dram (local currency).
