One of the things Slovenian people are most known for is being the wine lovers. Travelling through Slovenia, you will see a number of vineyards, especially in the Goriška, Istra and Prekmurje region, where people produce and sell home-made wines. A lot of the wineries are family businesses, being transmitted from generation to generation. You can read more about the tradition of the grape harvest in Slovenia or visit Stara trta - the oldest vine in the world, located in Maribor. Another hidden gem of the Slovenian viticulture is a unique heart-shaped road in the middle of vineyards in Špičnik.

Taste the wine and enjoy the view

Špičnik is a small settlement, located right by Slovenia’s northern border with Austria. It is known for being the place of many orchards and vineyards, with one location being extra special. I am talking about the beautiful sight of a road, shaped like a heart, which you will see from the top of a hill at a tourist farm called Dreisiebner. An interesting thing about this popular road is that, as the owner of the tourist farm says, it was created almost spontaneously to make the road to their home less steep. In Slovenia, this destination is known for being a romantic location, perfect for relaxing walks through the vineyards and tasting wine at the tourist farm by the Austrian border, which is known for having a long and rich tradition of winemaking. Besides that, you can also taste their delicious home-made treats and have a beforehand arranged degustation of quality wines in their 300-year old wine cellar.

I would recommend visiting the vineyards and the heart-shaped road in the warmer months of the year when you will get to enjoy the green or autumn colored view and take a walk in the warm sun. There are lots of walking and cycling paths located in the area. Some of them are even specially adapted for Nordic walking, being part of an international route of Nordic walking through the vineyards called Vinotour. Over the last few years, this destination has become a popular place for weddings and wedding celebrations, providing a stunning location for the perfect wedding photos.

There are many other tourist farms, small hotels and apartments located in the area of Špičnik, where you can spend a night or a few days in nature, with delicious food and friendly locals. If you want, you can even take a turn from the heart-shaped road in Slovenia and visit the vineyards of our neighbouring country.
