As famous Bulgaria is for its geographical location, it is perhaps even more famous for people's chilled mindset. The latter, combined with the natural diversity, results in numerous places, customs and events, connected to relaxing and having fun. Everything is possible in Bulgaria, both in the literal and abstract meaning. It is a great place for hiking, recharging your energy on one of the numerous beautiful beaches (such as Krapets and Durankulak), or skiing and other winter sports. So today, I am going to take you on a digital journey to a place which offers all kinds of activities, a well-hidden gem. This place is Bulgaria's perfect center, and it is called Uzana

About Uzana

Uzana is the name of an area but also of a meadow, surrounded by venerable oaks. It is the perfect center of Bulgaria, measured by mathematicians in 1991. It is located 22 km from the town of Gabrovo and 220 km from the capital - Sofia, hidden in the Stara Planina mountain range, just under Ispolin peak (1524 m). There is also a special sign here, painted with the colours of the Bulgarian flag – white, green, red. Uzana's Bulgarian name is actually “Vatro pole”, which means “an inside place”. Uzana is a Turkish name, which comes from a word for “long”. The name was officially changed in 1942, but the area is still popular by its old name.

What to do there?

Near the meadow, there are mountain huts, where you can stay, and an info center that offers information about flora and fauna of the place. Two big nature parks are nearby – National Park Centralen Balkan to the west and  Nature Park Bulgarka to the east. So, this area is a perfect place for hiking and spending time in nature. Uzana is near local sights such as the ethnographical complex “Etar”, Shipka peak, Kazanlak and the rose valley, and also Stara Zagora. Moreover, here you can do different sports, such as mountain biking and horse riding. In the winter, you can visit the Uzana ski tracks and ski through the woods in the area.

To sum up, Uzana is a well-hidden gem of Bulgarian nature, a place which presents you an opportunity to have various experiences at one location. They say all roads lead to Rome, but in Bulgaria, all roads lead to its heart, Uzana. Being the perfect center of the country, Uzana is a great place to visit on your next journey throughout Bulgaria!
