Do you fancy a getaway to a less busy, nicer beach near Barcelona? Malgrat de Mar is the perfect destination for a weekend break by the sea, though this quiet coastal town in Maresme offers much more: nature walks, original and unique parks, viewpoints, and its old town, among other things.

Malgrat de Mar is located in the province of Barcelona. In fact, it is the last town in the Maresme before entering the Costa Brava, so it is really close to the beautiful towns of Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar. From Barcelona, it takes one hour by car to get to Malgrat de Mar, and you can also go by train, and the journey takes less than 1 hour and 30 min.

Where to stay

Malgrat de Mar offers its visitors a wide variety of different types of accommodation for all likes and budgets. If you are looking for something more rural and fun to spend time with friends or family, this campsite could be a great option. Camping Resort Els Pins is located next to the beach in Malgrat de Mar. This campsite has four outdoor swimming pools, two for adults and two for children, a children's club, paddle tennis courts and football and basketball facilities.

Camping Resort Els Pins offers accommodation in bungalows and mobile homes. There is a buffet restaurant and a bar serving snacks and drinks. The campsite is just 500 metres from the mouth of the Tordera River, an ideal place for bird watching. Kitesurfing and windsurfing are also available in the area.

However, if you prefer something simpler and comfort, this stunning apartment is worth considering. Offering city views, Apartamento playa Costa Barcelona is located in Malgrat de Mar, within walking distance of Malgrat Beach Centre and Conca Beach. It is fully equipped to make you feel at home, and the flat features a terrace.

And my last option is for those who seek a bit of luxury. Luna Club is part of the Lunas Hotels complex and is located in a quiet area just 250 metres from the beach. The complex offers three swimming pools, a spa and 2 bars with sun terraces. On top of this, this well-equipped hotel organises free yoga, pilates, tai chi and watsu classes as part of the special Slow Travel programme. And its guests can enjoy drinks and snacks in the garden, a vegetarian menu, and a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. All very original and fun!

Malgrat’s beaches

More than 4.5 km of sand make up the four beaches of Malgrat de Mar. All of them are adapted and have lifeguards, showers and other services. The best known is the Playa del Centro Beach, awarded the Blue Flag.

If you fancy nature and less crowded and spoilt beaches, there is Conca Beach, home to the protected area of the dunes. This beach is more unspoilt and wild and has a nudist area and another area where dogs are welcome. There is also a nautical school where you can go windsurfing, paddle surfing, kayaking and many other water activities.

Places to visit in the city centre

It is worth walking through the old town of Malgrat de Mar and strolling around its most emblematic places, such as its Sant Nicolau Church and the popular Castell Park.

Its Castell Park is quite big and composed of different heights, as it is situated in the highest part of Malgrat. It is called the castle park because at the top you can see a tower of what is left of the old castle. The best thing about this park is the view. You have a nice panoramic view of Malgrat, including the church, which you can see perfectly from here.

Sant Nicolau Church is very popular with locals and tourists alike. It is located in the centre of Malgrat de Mar, right in the middle of the square and very close to the train station. As it is known today, the church was built in 1783 and is of neoclassical style.
