Description of National Park

Kolkheti National Park is located in the historical region of Colchis, in the western part of Georgia. It is surrounded by the wetlands and one of the biggest lakes Paliastomi. The park was established between 1998 and 1999, and the climate there is warm and humid. The main goal of the Nature Reserve is to protect flora and fauna of Kolkheti lowland. The reserve has a priceless scientific-research and historical significance. The landscape of the lowland forests and wetlands is still kept on the territory of Kolkheti National Park. You will also see rare types of trees and animals such as fawn, wild pig, etc. From October 2007, the Colchis ecosystem is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The wetlands and forests of Kolkheti are a reliable shelter for rare species of plants and animals. There is one of the routes for the migrating birds here. Some of the rarest types of birds are staying in this region during the winter before they are ready to migrate. The creation of Kolkheti National Park is connected to a special ecosystem on this territory. Several international organizations have a great role in rescuing the natural habitats of Kolkheti. The combination of wetland landscapes creates the most beautiful picture that can be seen on the Black Sea coast.

Activities

Kolkheti National Park has very good perspectives for the ecotourism. It is possible to observe the rare birds there, during their massive migration. This form of tourism is also known as bird-watching, and it is becoming more and more popular in Western countries. You will see the special towers for bird-watching on the territory of the park. In addition, the administration of the National Park offers several boating routes. The bird-watching is not the only exciting activity here. You can also see Paliastomi lake, the unique wetlands, and Colchian forest. A boat trip will impress you very much as every turn promises you a new surprise of wild nature. The tourism season here continues throughout the year, especially, from spring to late autumn.
