The beautiful and charming Antwerp is a port city located on Belgium’s River Scheldt, which links to the North Sea. In Belgium, it is the second-largest metropolitan after Brussels and also happens to be Europe’s second-largest port! This should not distract you from what truly matters, though – Antwerp is a gem imbued with a laid-back spirit and romanticism. The history of Antwerp dates back to the Middle Ages. Literally every building, street, every street fountain or even bench has its own rich and intriguing story. Beauty gushes from everywhere in this enchanting city – a tangible splendor of a thousand views.

The architecture intermingles several styles in perfect harmony and grace. Antwerp Central is one of the most instagramable places in the city, serving as inspiration for generations of artists. It is widely regarded as the finest example of railway architecture in Belgium. The truth is that even the most advanced smartphones cannot do justice to the unique beauty of the station. Better, go and see it first-hand, with your own eyes.

Who needs a beer?

Regardless of the time of the day, try to go right to the beer museum. It is a famous local attraction and definitely deserves your attention.

De Koninck Antwerp City Brewery provides an enjoyable experience for every self-respected tourist. It has a fascinating story, and the ticket for the tour includes two goblets of craft beer. Do not forget that you are in Belgium, which automatically means you are obligated to taste the local beer in every town.

A little detour

Speaking of breathtaking views, within hailing distance from the City Brewery, you will discover a small but charming botanical garden, part of a former 15th-century monastery and presently a 5-star hotel called Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp. It is a place with a rich story, preferred by many travel-connoisseurs.

Just around the corner, you will stumble on a coquettish little square with a gorgeous theatre building. This is Toneelhuis, the largest municipal theatre in Flanders. This is also the area of all the luxury fashion stores in town. If you are a fan of art and fancy clothing, this is your place.

The most gorgeous area of the city

Undoubtedly, there is nothing more enjoyable than a stroll next to the River Scheldt on a sunny day, right next to the quaint area of the Grote Markt or the Town Square. Expect breathtakingly beautiful buildings, stunning architecture, museums, cathedrals, boats, yachts and enticing aromas of delicious food. Make sure you have enough space on your camera’s memory card as the City Hall and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Antwerp are truly mesmerizing.

And while in the area, I would recommend that you visit a small local gallery called “De Zwarte Panter” (The Black Panther), a little bijou but a big cultural icon of Antwerp’s art scene.

The gallery is spread across several medieval buildings, including a former hospital. The owner, Adriaan Raemdonck, is the most polite and hospitable person in the world and is always available to recount the story of this place. And his dog, a rough collie, walks freely around, ready for caresses and games with the visitors.

For a proper end of the day, I would recommend a walk along the alley by the river. Over the years, Antwerp has gradually gentrified the seaport area, turning it from a place of the industry into a place for entertainment and culture. The most stunning attraction of the district is the contemporary building of the MAS Museum. Made of glass and red brick, MAS houses nine whole floors with various exhibitions. The rooftop of the museum offers an incredible panoramic view of the city (and for free!).

Antwerp is the perfect city for a long cultural, picturesque walk among imposing historic buildings, jewelry shops and contemporary museums and galleries. You will wish to come back here repeatedly, as the city always has something new and creative to surprise you with. Every building here, old or new, was created with a taste for the exquisite and to last for centuries. No wonder Antwerp is so enchanting and charming – a real splendor of a thousand views.
