Arenys de Mar is a coastal town with around 400 years of history and seafaring tradition, as it had major importance in the maritime routes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It was the only existing port on the northern slope of Barcelona for many years, which turned it into a relevant town in the region of Barcelona. This maritime charm can also be appreciated from some of its beaches and the fact that Arenys de Mar has a remarkable coastline, approximately 3.7 km long. History, architecture, adventure and gastronomy are just some of the best aspects you can enjoy with family and friends in this significant Catalonian town. Keep reading the story, and let me tell you a bit more.

The town of Arenys de Mar is located 40 km from Barcelona. There are very good communications, either by the N-II road or the C-32 motorway, or you can also take buses or trains from Barcelona. The Montseny massif is very close, and the Corredor-Montnegre Natural Park is only a few kilometres away. Girona is 60 km away, and Montserrat is an hour away. All these aspects make Arenys de Mar a great option for a getaway and to avoid having to pay the more expensive costs of the capital city.

Accommodation

If you are thinking about staying in Arenys for a few days, then this is considered by many as the best option in terms of accommodation. This stunning apartment by the beach is rated among the best and stands out for its incredible location and views and the services it includes, like a spa and access to sports fields.

If you are looking for a simpler and cheaper option, then L'Hostalet de Arenys de Mar is probably one of the best. Its guests have all highlighted how comfortable the en-suite bedrooms are and the good value in terms of prices. It is located in the city centre, close to the beach too.

And the last option I am recommending (if your budget is not tight) is this incredible villa which offers a garden and a terrace. This is a great option if you travel with friends or relatives. Offering an outdoor pool, garden and sea views, Stay U-nique Villa also features a private pool, barbecue facilities and free private parking.

And as I mentioned before, all these great choices are very close to one of the three beaches of Arenys,  El Cavaió Beach. This beach is also known as Tercera Playa. With a length of 900 metres and a width of 113 metres, El Cavaió stands out for its golden sand and calm waters, and it is equipped with a large number of services.

Arenys de Mar's Port

Fishing and all the industry created around the port drive a large part of the town's economic activity. The port concentrates almost the entire fishing fleet of Catalonia. The fish auction that takes place every afternoon when the keelboats and the boats return is a picturesque spectacle that attracts many visitors yearly. The fish from the Arenys fish market is highly valued throughout Catalonia, especially the prawns, sonsos and squid. So much so that the local restaurants and the fish market hold a gastronomic event in autumn, the Calamarenys, whose main protagonist is the Arenys squid

Then I highly recommend trying the local food in one of the many restaurants of the port. It should be a must experience and one that you will not regret. And after lunch, there is nothing better than an outing with a swallow to let yourself be caressed by the Mediterranean breeze. The Port of Arenys offers different leisure options related to the sea, but the season will obviously mark the availability.

A trip to Arenys de Mar seems like a good idea to spend some days with friends or family. Its long seafaring tradition has turned its fantastic port into one of the city's most beautiful and enjoyable parts and one of the most important in Catalonia. History, architecture, adventure and gastronomy can all be enjoyed in this coastal town.
