To all nature lovers, I am glad to introduce one of the most beautiful lakes in Azerbaijan, but also in the Causasus region, which is situated at the footsteps of Murovdag ( a mountain in the Lesser Caucasus range) not far from Ganja city.
The name “Goygol” means Blue Lake in Azerbaijani language. The reason behind the name is the spectacular blue color of the lake which is created from the reflection of the green forest around and the blue sky as a mirror. As the lake has a wonderful location among forests and mountains, it exhibits worth seeing landscapes.
The lake is located 1556 m above the sea level and was created as a consequence of an earthquake which lead to collapse of Kapaz Mountain and block of the path of Agsu River in 1139. Besides Goygol, other 18 lakes were created as a result of this natural disaster including Maralgol, Zeligol, etc.
Water of Goygol is so pure that 8-10 m out of 96 m of total depth is visible. Additionally, Goygol is also known for its rich fauna such as trout, Caucasian red deer, brown bear, Billy goat, roe deer and badger.
As Goygol and the surrounding forest landscape are so charming and fascinating, it inspired many artists to write a variety of songs and poems throughout centuries.
Finally, if you want to get away from everyday life and discover a natural place where you can breathe fresh air of mountains and enjoy the admirable beauty of a pure lake, Goygol is what you need!
