Brežice Castle, also known as Grad Brežice, is a fortress in southeastern Slovenia with a rich history going back to the 12th century. The castle, as we know it today, was built and completed in the 16th century in the place where a fortress once stood, which was demolished during an uprising in 1515. Nowadays, it has a very important role, serving as a local museum. The Museum of the Posavje Region is located within the citadel, which is also the place of many cultural events, historical exhibitions, and musical concerts.

A museum representing people

The Museum of the Posavje Region (or Posavski Muzej Brežice) has been representing history and culture of the Lower Sava Valley since 1949, when the museum collections were moved from the town of Krško to Brežice. The region, where it is located, is extending along the lower part of the river Sava, on the border with Croatia, and is known as the Posavje region in Slovenian. The area is a popular tourist destination, with many possibilities for a fun and relaxing vacation in nature. If you would like to get to know the region from a historical and cultural point of view, you will get the opportunity to do so at this local museum, where more than 100 various exhibitions, representing the way of life in the Lower Sava Valley, are available. The exhibitions mainly focus on the lives, works, and customs of the people of the Lower Sava Valley, as well as the interesting historical periods and events throughout the 19th and the 20th century, including displays of the region during World War II. The entry fee for the museum is only four euros, and different types of discounts are available for students, pensioners, kids, and families.

The hall of frescoes

Of course, I can’t forget to mention the unique treasure of the citadel, the stunning baroque hall, known as the Knight’s Hall or "Viteška dvorana". The idea for the hall came from the aristocratic family the Atemms, who once resided in the castle and were very fond of the Baroque art. Some of the well-known artists of that time decorated the hall for them, painting it with unique frescoes and paintings in Baroque style.

A visit to Brežice Castle is a great choice for all of those who would like to explore the inside of this beautiful renaissance citadel and learn about its interesting history. The Museum of the Posavje Region, located within the castle, is more than just a local museum with different ethnological and historical collections. It is also a representation and an important reminder of the difficult lives of people in the Lower Sava Valley during some of the most challenging periods in the history of the 19th and the 20th century. After you are done exploring the castle and  museum, you can head down to the lovely town of Brežice for a coffee, drink, or a nice local meal.  Perhaps you can also go pamper yourself at the largest Slovenian health resort Terme Čatež, located just a 10-minute drive from Brežice. The medieval Žužemberk Castle and Otočec Castle, with a touch of modernity, are two other popular and beautiful destinations, located not so far away.
