Coming from a city where the carnival festivities is actually a big thing that everyone awaits for the whole year (yeah, Kozani’s carnival in Greece is kinda great- Check the relevant page) I was surprised when I first spent last February in Spain. Carnival in Spain is known for its vibrant costumes and masks; although the Carnival celebration in Spain is not as esthetically beautiful as in Venice nor as over the top and dance orientated as in Brazil. It is a charming event in which people of all ages participate and enjoy, even those with little resources. The event allows people to dress up, change their identity and feel freer than during the rest of the year. Participants dress according to their possibilities and imagination and take to the streets to celebrate both night and day; crazy days in which nothing is what it seems and anyone can become whoever or whatever they have always dreamed about being. The Carnival in Spain is full of smiles and fun, where you may run into superheroes, medieval knights, pirates, clowns or zombies as you walk through the street.

But which cities organize the best carnival festivities in Spain that shouldn’t be missed?! Well, as I have just mentioned, the carnival in Spain is celebrated nationwide though the most raucous festivities are in the Canary Islands, Cadiz and Sitges. While each town has its own unique flavour of celebration they all have a devotion to having a good time. In these main destinations during Carnival it seems that no one sleeps as the drinking and dancing go from dusk until dawn. You wanna explore the best carnival locations in Spain? Well, all you have to do is just scrolling down this page! Enjoy!

If you can’t make it to one of these fabulous parties do not worry, Spain has several other Carnivals that are definitely worth your time. No matter where you are in Spain, you can reach out and touch the Carnival spirit and let it touch you in return!

Ay, no hay que llorar... que la vida es un carnaval y las penas se van cantando!
