Castellfollit de la Roca is undoubtedly one of the most peculiar and unique places in Girona. This village, lost in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees, is perched on a 50-metre-high, one-kilometre-long volcanic cliff. The postcard of Castellfollit de la Roca is one of the most beautiful of all the Garrotxa, and it definitely is a medieval village that you cannot miss when exploring the Catalonia region, as it has unique architecture and conditions

Besides, Castellfollit de la Roca is almost immersed in the Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrocha, which makes the location of the town and its surroundings unbeatable. Would you like to know more about this medieval town? Keep reading and find out what to see or do and great accommodation if you want to stay over.

Castellfollit is one of the smallest towns in Catalonia, meaning you can visit the village in just one day. Despite its few thousand inhabitants and its small size, Castellfollit de la Roca is one of the most visited in the Catalan Pyrenees, and I totally recommend doing so in spring or autumn, due to the colours of the scenery and the fact that there will not be many tourists. Suppose you are staying in Barcelona and fancy a good getaway experience to explore the mountains and the medieval villages nearby. In that case, this activity is a great way to do it and includes visiting this stunning place.

I believe visiting Castellfollit means losing oneself in a medieval village with a winding, shady network of streets that narrows until you reach the church, Catellfollit's most emblematic landmark. Castellfollit de la Roca has an old quarter with a very marked medieval character, and it keeps the typical urban structure of the period, with narrow, shady streets and corners with a special charm. The narrow streets of the village lead to the old church of Sant Salvador at the end of the cliff, where there is a viewpoint with spectacular views.

Most of the houses within the medieval quarter also maintain the traditional construction model of this region, as the buildings maintain the façade formed by the volcanic rocks. This good state of conservation allows visitors to travel back in time and get to know the traditional architecture of times gone by. In terms of accommodation, I believe this cute traditional house makes a perfect option as it keeps the traditional construction model and is located in the heart of the village, literally on the cliff, and offers impressive views. However, if you prefer something simpler, this guest house has a restaurant serving traditional Catalan dishes from the area and stands out for having incredibly comfy beds and good prices. Both options are highly rated by many guests and are considered a great addition to the experience of visiting Catellfollit de la Roca.

Castellfollit de la Roca is considered a unique and spectacular medieval village due to its location, perched on a 50-metre-high volcanic cliff in the heart of the Pyrenees, its conditions and its architecture. Like I told you throughout the story, it makes the perfect getaway experience for those who seek peace and nature and want to explore the remotest and smallest towns in Catalonia
