The countryside in Espírito Santo, Brazil, is breath-taking and incredibly romantic, especially for young valentines, willing to stroll around in nature. The coffee plantations, the mountains, and the cold weather distinguish the countryside from the coast in a considerable way.
Outside the small city of Domingos Martins (where hundreds of descendants of Pomeranian people still speak their rare around the world dialect), there is a national park very famous for its lizard-shape mountain. It is the Parque Estadual da Pedra Azul.
The 'Pedra Azul Forest Reserve' became the 'Parque Estadual da Pedra Azul' in 1991 to protect the Atlantic Forest ecosystem that occupies an area of 12.4 square kilometers. In fact, only 5% of this extension can be visited.
The name Pedra Azul was given because, depending on the incidence of sunlight, the stone can change color: it often becomes blue or green and even yellow. It is also known as Pedra do Lagarto, due to its lizard-shape rock, as you can see below.
There are two main routes visitors can take. If you are short on time, you can pick the low trails at the base of Pedra Azul, where you can see the lizard-shape rock from a very close viewpoint. It takes about 1h30min to go and return.
But if you have more time and you want to check out the natural pools on the rocks, you will certainly enjoy a lot more your visit! It takes about 3 hours, and you can also have a refreshing bath amid this paradisiacal setting.
If you want to visit Parque Estadual da Pedra Azul, you will have to schedule it at least one day in advance. In fact, a forest ranger must accompany you during the entire route. The park is open for visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, and the tours start at 9 am or at 1:30 pm.
Unlike Europe and the United States, Valentine's Day in Brazil is celebrated on the 12th of June. This change of dates is strategic, to boost sales during June.
But besides, June is a month of transition between autumn and winter, which for Brazilians is synonymous with romantic walks, comfortable beds, and coffees with spectacular views.
Therefore, during June, many couples look for hotels in the countryside, where they can enjoy Valentine's Day at its best. Pousada Pedra Azul is located next to Parque Estadual da Pedra Azul and is one of the favorite accommodations for couples who want to spend more time in the countryside of Espírito Santo.
If you visit Vila Velha or any other city in Espírito Santo at this time, I recommend you extend your trip with your loved one and explore Parque Estadual da Pedra Azul. It will give you a whole different point of view, and your valentine's day will be memorable!
