Thuringia

The Free State of Thuringia is a federal state in east-central central Germany. It has an area of 16,171 square kilometres and 2.29 million inhabitants, making it the sixth smallest by area and the fifth smallest by population of Germany's sixteen states....

Most of Thuringia is within the watershed of the Saale, a left tributary of the Elbe. The land is known for its vast forests punctuated with mountain peaks and medieval villages. Its capital is Erfurt, home of 8th-century cathedral Erfurt Cathedral, where Martin Luther, father of the Protestant Reformation, was ordained. As a monk, Luther lived in the medieval Augustinerkloster (monastery). Zitadelle Petersburg is an imposing baroque fortress outside the city. Thuringia offers many activities, sites to discover, world heritage, beautiful cities and regions, forests and other tourist attractions for visitors.
