North Maluku

Covering the northern part of the Maluku Islands, North Maluku is one of the least populated provinces of Indonesia, and also less popular with tourists. The capital city is Sofifi, situated on Halmahera Island....

Rich with volcanic islands, untouched equatorial jungles, black-sand beaches and coral reefs, the province of North Maluku has one of the greatest marine biodiversities in the world. A complete absence of civilization as we know it and off-the-beaten-track location make for an ideal hidden paradise in this part of Indonesia. The remote island of Halmahera, the largest one in Maluku, offers some mesmerizing landscapes: active volcanoes such as Gunung Dukono and Gunung Ibu, an ecoregion “Halmahera rainforests” with its Wallacea unique flora and fauna, but also beautiful white and black sand beaches with excellent surfing and snorkeling sites. Two most important North Maluku’s islands are Ternate and Tidore. While Tidore has fallen into oblivion, Ternate with its black-sand beaches and colorful boats in the turquoise water is a must-see for all travelers. North Maluku’s national parks are also worth exploring – Aketajawe-Lolobata for its birdwatching and Manusela for its snorkeling.
