Gifu

Nestled in the middle of the Chubu Region within the island of Honshu, Gifu Prefecture is considered to be the heart of Japan. Gifu is one of only eight landlocked prefectures in Japan. The capital of this prefecture is the city of Gifu....

From the Japan Alps with hot springs and stunning landscapes to untouched traditional villages with castles and historical sites, this prefecture offers unexpected treasures. Perhaps less known than Hokkaido and Nagano, but Gifu Prefecture has got a fair share of ski slopes of all levels covered by 35 ski resorts, mainly in Takayama and Hida. Rich with hot springs, Gero is famous for its onsen, considered as one of the best in Japan. History lovers will enjoy visiting the site of an epic battle in Sekigahara, discovering Takayama also known as “Little Kyoto” or exploring the charming historical villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama with its thatched-roof houses. If in a quest for impressive views, opt for Gifu Castle situated high on Mt. Kinka. And once there, you will have a chance to admire a 14-meter tall Gifu Buddha, one of the three Great Buddhas of Japan. This area is also renowned for its 1300-year-old tradition of cormorant fishing on the Nagara River.
