Miyagi

Miyagi Prefecture covers the central part of the Tōhoku Region on the main Japanese island of Honshu. The capital city of this prefecture facing the Pacific Ocean is Sendai....

Do not expect ultra-modern Japan in the prefecture of Miyagi. From hot springs with onsen to a majestic coastline with ryokan to historical landmarks and spectacular festivals – this is rather a laid-back and hassle-free area. Probably one of the best destinations in Japan to soak in the healing hot spring waters are Akiu Onsen, Sakunami Onsen and Naruko Onsen. Spread over the Miyagi Prefecture, they are ideal for a relaxing weekend in the mountains. When it comes to splendid vistas, Matsushima Bay is renowned as one of the three most scenic views of Japan. With some 260 small pine islands and many ocean-facing ryokan (traditional inns), this bay offers great rejuvenation. If you are into history, don’t miss the Sendai Castle and the mausoleum of Date Masamune. And if you happen to visit this region at the beginning of August, make sure to join the crowd at the Sendai Tanabata Matsuri Festival.
