The city center has many historic buildings to see and museums to visit. Cultural life in Klaipeda is bustling, and the city hosts many kinds of music and film festivals throughout the year. Just to the south of the city of Klaipeda is the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that spans between Lithuania and Russia. It is a long strip of land that separates the Baltic Sea from the Curonian Lagoon. The sand dune covered Curonian Spit was a popular artists’ colony during the 19th century, and today is a popular holiday spot, particularly the town of Nida.
