Panevezys

Located in the northeast part of Lithuania is Panevezys County. The name Panevezys means “along the Nevėžis” which is the name of the river that the city of Panevezys is located on....

The city has many brightly colored churches that you’ll want to make sure you see as you’re walking around town. In the 19th century, Panevezys was an important city for Lithuanian book smugglers, known as knygnešys in Lithuanian. One book smuggler later opened the first Lithuanian bookstore, which is still open for you to visit today, more than 100 years later. The city has a nice culture scene — every year, there is an International Ceramics Symposium, and as such the city has a growing ceramics collection. There are also several theaters and music groups in the city.
