Lisbon

An area of great importance and relevance, the Region of Lisbon and the Tejo Valley is comprised of the cities, towns and other areas located around the mouth of the river Tejo. Still, it has plenty of beautiful landscapes, sites and activities to discover and enjoy. By the coast sits Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal....

Lisbon has been having an ever-increasing tourism rate, much like Porto in the North. The city’s charm and variety is enough to spark interest, but it is also the most culturally busy place in the whole country. It is very rich historically too, with areas like Belém, Terreiro do Paço and Rossio holding a lot of the city’s landmarks, museums and other historic attractions. The buzzing movement of the capital can be overwhelming, especially in the summer, but this region has a lot more to offer besides the urban centers. Along its coast sit many popular beaches, and there are river beaches along the Tejo too. The sunbathed and ostentatious areas of Cascais and Estoril are full of fantastic spots, great for surfing, like Carcavelos and Guincho. You can also find great beaches to the south of the region, like Costa da Caparica, and near the city of Setúbal, like Figueirinha and Meco. To the north of Lisbon, near Sintra and Lourinhã, there are more popular beaches like Areia Branca, Magoito and São Julião. This is also an area of beautiful landscapes and villages. Lourinhã is best known for its important archeological findings and research center and dinausaur park. Sintra is another marvellous region on its own, with many attractions that rival those of Lisbon, a romantic atmosphere and little hidden wonders throughout its lush green hill. Quinta da Regaleira, for example, is a must. In Sintra, there is a lot of summer activity too, in the beaches mentioned before, the sites of historical relevance, like Palácio da Pena and Castelo dos Mouros, and most of all the outdoors activities like hiking and site seeing, during which you can enjoy the mountainous terrain and fantastic natural environment.
