Catalonia

Catalonia is the economic motor of Spain as well as one of its most popular tourist areas. It is dominated by Barcelona, its metropolis with its innumerable cultural and artistic riches, the city of the architect Gaudí and painters Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí....

But beyond that, it is a coastal region – the Costa Brava – basking in the sun, with a mountainous backcountry dotted with churches and monasteries in the midst of astonishing landscapes and a gastronomy featuring some of the world's most famous restaurants. A region with a strong sense of identity, where the Catalan language is used daily alongside Spanish, it has for many years been expressing a strong drive towards independence.
