Mallorca is the perfect island to spend the summer holidays since it offers a wide range of cultural experiences as well as idyllic beaches with crystal clear and turquoise water. I had the opportunity to explore the south part of the island and discover truly amazing places by campervan. There is a charming little fishing town in the eastern side of Mallorca called Porto Cristo with a natural harbor perfect for families, friends, or couples who are looking for relaxation

Porto Cristo has 6,000 inhabitants, and everything turns around its picturesque fishing port from which the rest of the town has developed. The beauty of this port relies on the fact that it is a natural port, a zed-shaped sea tongue that enters the land, currently plagued by small typical Majorcan “yaguts” boats protected from the open sea. The sports pier is one of the most beautiful areas of Porto Cristo where you can find bars, shops, terraces, and restaurants to have some local food and fish.

Porto Cristo has a beautiful urban beach right next to the port that is usually quite busy, both by tourists and by the local people. It is 350m long sand tongue bordered by the promenade. The beach does not have the turquoise crystalline waters of other areas of the island since it is framed in a natural harbor. Instead, you have a natural environment that surrounds the beach, and that makes it an extraordinary location. However, if you want to find crystal clear beaches with turquoise water, you will be able to find plenty of those in the surrounding areas. Some of them are Cala Romántica, Cala Millor, or the incredible Cala del Moro

Cuevas del Drach

The most popular attraction of Porto Cristo and the reason why it receives thousands of tourists every year are the wonderful Caves of Drach, “the dragon caves” in English. These caves are a true wonder of nature and one of the most significant attractions of Mallorca. Located 25m deep, the caves are over 2400m long, and it has the largest underground lake in Europe, called Lake Martel, in honor to the person who discovered the lake. The effect of water filtering for centuries through the subsoil of limestone has formed these caves and molded each of its cavities. The main activity is the tour that takes about an hour that includes a classical music concert and a boat trip across Lake Martel. The temperature inside is about 21°C and the humidity 80%.

If you go to Porto Cristo with a campervan, there are plenty of places and cliffs surrounding the town where you can park and spend the night. I absolutely recommend you to get up early to see the sunrise.  Don’t miss this picturesque fishing town and its incredible caves if you visit Mallorca!
