Many people know that Armenians have a huge musical cultural heritage, but few would guess that jazz is also well spread all over the country, and it is one of the very developed musical styles in Armenia. It was popular here even back in the Soviet times, and since then, hundreds of jazz bands have been established in Armenia. I know some places where to attend classic jazz concerts in Yerevan to fully dive into the world of jazz and I will tell about them below. Modern jazz spots are always easy to, find as there are many of them in the town. Armenians usually like to “armenianize” what they play, and in each branch of music, they put their local motives. However, when it comes to jazz, it is not the case, and when visiting jazz clubs, you know that what you are going to explore pure jazz.
There are many ways to spend evenings in Yerevan, and some of the most pleasant ones are visiting jazz clubs. Here are the top three jazz clubs worth visiting:
Malkhas Jazz Club is located on the central Pushkin Street. All the Jazz lovers who visit Armenia for sure stop there. It has a very unique atmosphere, and the music they play always makes you forget about everything, relax and to enjoy each moment there. The club is founded by a famous Armenian pianist and Jazzman Levon Malkhasyan, where actually the name of the club comes from. His club is liked by everyone - artists, singers, high officials, celebrities, and so on.
Ulikanyan Club is located on Kochar Street, which is also a central one in Yerevan. When you enter the club, you already feel the artistic approach, thanks to its ancient furniture. It is a very cozy corner to gather with friends to enjoy mind-blowing concerts that jazz singers and musicians organize there. Sometimes, there also take place concerts by singers from abroad. The design of the club and the music make a very friendly atmosphere. Even if you go there alone, you will not feel lonely, and I say this based on my experience.
Mezzo Music Club is also a cool place where often jazz bands are hosted. However, it is not focussed on jazz only, and there are different bands each time that represent different styles of music. It is a fantastic place to spend quality evenings in Yerevan for jazz lovers, but not only.
For all the above-mentioned clubs, you have to reserve your seat in advance, as they are usually full. In general, there are many places where they play jazz music in Yerevan, but my recommendation is to start exploring the world of jazz in Armenia from these ones.
