Imagine – it’s summertime; green mountains above, blue sea below, birds singing, a glass of wine on the table, and you wake up in the city where Daenerys Targaryen is the queen, and all the people live in love and peace. It’s only a dream, but a common one for all of us out there, who've developed a mild addiction to the Game of Thrones TV show. Reality is something different, and to see if the Mother of Dragons is going to be the ultimate queen, you'd have to wait until the very last episode. Visiting Dubrovnik in Croatia, you will feel a fraction of that atmosphere (blue see, great wine, and green forest are guaranteed), and you will recognize many of the locations from the Game of Thrones series. With the local guides, you can visit all the filming locations and get thorough insights into the filming of famous and iconic scenes from the show. Let's explore in detail how Dubrovnik became King's Landing.

King's Landing and the throne are the ultimate desires of all the self-proclaimed kings and queens in the Seven Kingdoms. The Red Keep is an important castle on Aegon's Hill, where the famous throne is located. Remember all those small council meetings in the Red Keep, a headquarters for the government of Seven Kingdoms, and the place of so many unfortunate Lannisters' plans? You can visit, touch, and smell all these locations, and even sit on the Iron Throne without causing the next World War, while exploring magical Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik, a gorgeous city on the Adriatic coast, brings millions of tourists to Croatia from all over the world. It was popular ever since the Middle Ages for its optimal location and strategic position, but now even more increasingly so as it's become an important place for a contemporary world sensation Game of Thrones. It’s a splendid place that offers more than other coastline cities. Narrow marble streets, cobblestones, homemade dishes, domestic wine, sand beaches, monuments, Roman, Venetian, Slavic, and Austrian layers - everything is there, shining in a romantic harmony.

Dubrovnik - King's Landing

As a big Game of Thrones fan, observing the outline of the Old Town, you will notice that you are actually entering the King’s Landing. This magnificent Old Town with its walls was a place where HBO shot their most successful TV show yet. Of course, many things are different and changed in production, but again you will love to walk down the streets tracing the steps of your favorite heroes. And yes, the “Walk of Shame” scene was shot here, literally on the dreamy Dubrovnik streets. Fort Lovrijenac, Dubrovnik Old Town, Mirčeta Tower, Pile Gate, or the Walls of Dubrovnik, in short, are just some of the dozen of the Game of Thrones filming locations. Besides Dubrovnik, some of the Game of Thrones episodes were shot in other Croatian cities such as Split and Šibenik, as well as the town of Klis. And if you are a true travel enthusiast and Game of Thrones fan, don't miss the chance to discover Game of Thrones locations in Spain.

Fort Lovrijenac - Red Keep

Just as the Fort Lovrijenac is important for Dubrovnik and its history, the Red Keep is a very significant fort in King's Landing. The Fortress Lovrijenac is protecting the entrance of Dubrovnik Old Town, and it is located in the northwestern part of the city overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Red Keep, on the other hand, overlooks the Narrow Sea and Blackwater Bay, and it is located in the southeastern part of King's Landing. Once you're on the top of the Lovrijenac Fortress and the breeze from the sea hits your face, you will know why the Game of Thrones creators decided to film the show exactly here.

How to get there

Dubrovnik has its own airport and is well connected with other parts of Croatia and Europe. Additionally, it's easy to reach from Montenegro (Herceg Novi) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Trebinje) via road.

"Game of Thrones" filming locations in Dubrovnik are many - Dubrovnik Old Town, Fort Lovrijenac, Minčeta Tower, the Old Town walls, the tiny streets, and many more. Hopefully, with this guide, if you come to Dubrovnik, you will know exactly where to head to relive your favorite scenes from the show and feel a bit of King's Landing atmosphere in real life.
