Going from Switzerland to France: a boat trip from Nyon to Yvoire

Nyon is a lovely town on Lake Geneva (Léman). Its castle, museums, festivals and walks along the beautiful lake, make Nyon deserving of a visit.

This time we are taking you on a boat trip from Nyon to Yvoire. From one country, Switzerland, to its neighbouring France. The border is more official than real. When you cross the border, you will hardly have to declare how many kilos of chocolate you bought in Switzerland. Locals in both Nyon and Yvoire speak French.

Nyon and Yvoire are on the two opposite sides of Lake Geneva. Lake Geneva or Léman is one of the largest lakes in western Europe. It is also a natural border between Switzerland and France. With its crystal-clear water and beautiful surrounding Alps, it is arguably one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe. During the 20-minute boat ride you will enjoy marvellous landscapes. The boat trip is a great way to get fantastic views on Nyon and Yvoire.

Yvoire is a small medieval town set beautifully on the French side of Lake Geneva. It once was a strategic place on the route through the Alps between France and Italy. The first fortification dates back to 1306. At the time, Dauphiné and Savoy counties were at war. Count Amédée V the Great of Savoy built a castle and fortifications in Yvoire to defend better his county. The walls, gates and castle are well preserved. Unfortunately, the castle is not open to visitors. You can learn more about Yvoire's history in the House of History located in the medieval centre.

Today the village is appreciated for its tourist historical centre, narrow streets, small shops and pretty houses. Locals put a lot of love and effort into decorating the streets with flowers and plants. Yvoire received several times the French prize for the best kept villages in the country.

If the weather is nice and you want to make the most of it, make sure to head over to the domain of Rovorée – La Châtaignière Area. Located eastwards outside the village, the two public properties offer 24 hectares of Protected Nature Area along the banks of the lake. The place is accessible on foot, just follow the green path leaving from Yvoire.

The Garden of the Five Senses is another enjoyable outdoor attraction in the heart of the medieval village. This classified "Remarkable Garden" by the French Ministry of Culture is the castle's former kitchen garden. In this green labyrinth, you are invited to see, hear, touch, smell and even taste several plants. A great visit to do with kids.
