Welcome to the land of the never-ending summer and of the permanent sunshine!

Gran Canaria gets an average of 320 sunny days every year while the average temperature even in winter reaches the 24-25 degrees. The island is located about 200 kilometers from the coasts of Africa at the border between Morocco and Western Sahara, so yes, it is fairly called the island of the eternal summer and yes the temperatures are normally that high! With a dramatic variation of terrain, ranging from the green and leafy north to the mountainous interior and desert south, Gran Canaria is a place definitely worth-visiting.

As you’ve probably noticed from the title, yes Canaria is the perfect place for people who love surfing and here are the reasons why!

Surf on Gran Canaria’s beaches

If you’re on holiday in Gran Canaria and want to combine it with surf, then the island has some beautiful places, (such as the Maspalomas beach or the Playa del Ingles) in store for you. The wind and the waves of the Atlantic ocean give surfers the quality they want. If you are not yet familiar with surfing, you can still learn, since in Gran Canaria you can easily find several surf schools, that will in fact teach you the basics and equip you properly for the time of your life.

In Gran Canaria, there are some incredible beaches out there to be discovered, some easy to find, others practically impossible, but those with enough ambition will get there eventually.

Surf Canaries School

As said there are multiple surf schools, that can be actually found all around the island. However my personal recommendation would be the “Surf Canaries School”, based at the foot of the sand dunes of Maspalomas, in Playa del Inglés.

While traveling in the island I got tempted to surf for the first time. After exploring a bit the area, I got informed that one of the best schools of the island was situated right next to my hostel. Without doubting it much, I signed up and gave it a try! The experience was just rewarding!

With really affordable prices I had the chance to learn to surf with them in perfect weather, perfect waves and with highly experienced, fun and qualified instructors! Specifically, the local beach, Playa del Inglés was the ideal place to be, since it had excellent waves for learning and improving very fast. The school’s strict safety protocol and well tried and tested teaching methods, combined with a real good sense of fun is what makes it highly recommended.

As mentioned in their website, their permanent team of highly trained, enthusiastic instructors strive to ensure that each one has a fantastic experience in and out of the water, either as a one day surf experience or a week long surf course. Out of this, they can share Gran Canaria's beauty and fantastic waves whilst giving everyone the chance to experience what it is to catch a wave…

The surfers visiting the Gran Canaria, are lucky to travel to many beaches in their quest for waves and this leads them to find some real treasures along the way. For me, it was a day worth-remembering and of course a day completely out of the ordinary! Catching a wave required effort and strength, and after falling for soooo many times, all I’ve to confess is, that in the end the experience is just rewarding!

Are you ready to catch your first wave?
