Island of butterflies and flowers: Mainau!

Mainau, aka flower island, is a beautiful island in Lake Constance in Germany. The island belongs to the Lennart Bernadotte Foundation which was created by the Prince of Sweden and Duke of Småland. This gorgeous island attracts more than a million tourists every year with its famous greenhouse butterfly sanctuary! Mainau is maintained as a garden island and today it is a place where you can find lots of different gardens that bloom in every season. You can find here orchids, roses, dahlias and many more! And, this island in Lake Constance has a love story too! It is known that the island owes its beautiful look to the Count Lennart Bernadott! Our tasteful count married a commoner in 1932 and then moved to Mainau but when they moved here, all they could see lots of wild plants which was brought by the previous royalty members like Nikolaus III. Esterházy to the island. So Count and his beautiful wife wanted to make this island a home and started to improve here and then opened it to the public! Thanks to them, today, we can admire the real beauty of this island. And a little tip; if you like tulips, you have to visit here on spring. If you are a dahlia fan, you have to visit here in autumn. On summer, the island is filled with gorgeous roses. So if you want to check out the island and its beautiful gardens, here is your guide!

Ok first thing first, the butterfly house. In here you will see not only beautiful butterflies but also you will be mesmerized by the unique vegetation and the exotic environment. You will find more than 120 species of butterflies from Africa, Asia, Central and South America! But I have to warn you, in order to make the perfect environment for the adorable butterflies, inside the house is very humid and around 25 to 30°C. Not only butterflies, you can also see moths with a wingspan of up to 30 cm! And let's not forget cute caterpillars too. If you will visit here with your kids, it's the perfect opportunity to show them the entire lifecycle of beautiful butterflies. After exploring the butterfly house, don't forget to enjoy ice cream in the shops. And of course, don't forget to treat your loved ones with a souvenir.

There are lots of other gardens in Mainau but the one which stole my heart is the Italian rose garden. In here you will see marble statues, fountains, and a geometric garden with the amazing smell of the roses. Not just classic roses, but also you will be mesmerized by the profuse-flowering climbing roses on trellises, rose pyramids and many more. I am not kidding, there are more than 1,200 types of roses! You definitely have to check out!
