Jaisalmer's striking Golden Fort & Gadisar Lake

Rajasthan, the western state of India, is also known as the land of kings due to various kingdoms that inhabited here in the past. Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort is considered one of the largest forts in the world and is commonly known as Sonar Quilla or Sone ka Quilla (golden fort). The fort gets the golden prefix as its yellow sandstone walls change hues depending on the position of the sun. It is a lovely sight to see the fort changing its colour from bright yellow during the day to dewy honey at the sunsets. The fort stands tall on the Trikuta Hill, surrounded by Thar desert from all sides. The strategic location of the fort was chosen to display the strength and dominance of the royal Rajput clan of Rajasthan. Around 1156 AD, the Golden Fort was established by Raja Rawal Jaiswal, who was a Bhatti Rajput ruler.

Architecture

The Golden Fort is a charming structure that has stood the test of time in various battles. The fort has a mesmerizing appeal as it combines Islamic and Rajput architectural elements. Interestingly, the fort was also a part of the silk route from the 16th to 18th century. Here, Rajasthani aesthetics in prints and designs of the fort look stunning. The fort is 1500 ft tall and 750 ft wide and is built on a hill, which gives it a height of 250 ft above sea level. This large structure glows whimsically when sun rays fall on its big walls.

The Fort has four entrances: Hawa Pole, Akshay Pole, Suraj Pole, and Ganesha Pole. There are many palaces inside the fort: Akhai Vilas, the Rang Mahal, Sarvottam Vilas, Gaj Mahal, and the Moti Mahal. All of them add a unique charm to the beauty and history of the fort. Additionally, the fort houses several museums, shops, restaurants, accommodations, and hotels, etc.

How to reach?

The nearest airport to the Golden Fort is Jodhpur airport, which is easily connected to all national and international flights. Jaisalmer is also easily accessible via trains, road routes, and private cabs. Since the fort is located amidst the mighty Thar desert, it is a wise decision to visit during October - March when the heat is tolerable, and you can explore plenty of other places around. Some nearby places are Laxminath and Jain temples, Kuldhara village (an abandoned village), Bada Bagh, and Patwon Ki Haveli.

Gadisar Lake

Located 30 km away from Pakistan's border, Jaisalmer is home to several striking structures. One such man-made structure is the Gadisar Lake in Jaisalmer. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, the lake serves as a popular spot amongst tourists. You can enjoy a peaceful time around the lake with your loved ones.
