Like every bigger city, Zagreb has its own parks, squares, and other natural oases. Such places certainly serve to hide from the city heat and rush, as a city embellishment or as a place for recreation. Zabreb has its own lake, on the southern edge of the city. It is called Jarun Lake and is located in the neighborhood with the same name. So, let's discover this lake and its six islands.

General info

First and foremost - how to reach Lake Jarun? The lake is about seven kilometers far from the city center or about one hour and thirty minutes by walking or half an hour by bike. If none of these is your option, then simply take the tram number 17. Lake Jarun is located in the south of the city of Zagreb.

The lake was formed along the river Sava. It dominates this landscape with its big surface. The lake has six small islands: Youth Island, Island of Wildlife, Island of Love, Universiade Island, Trešnjevka Island and Island of the rowers. Near the lake, there is a skate park. At the edge of the lake, many cafes and restaurants are located, and the authorities have made sure that the beaches on the lake remind of those on the sea. Let me add that, in the lake, you can see ducks and swans that are especially beautiful.

A music festival venue

Part of the city around Lake Jarun is a pleasant area for living since the river Sava, lake, and parks are here. This is a popular destination for the citizens of Zagreb and the city guests during the hot summer months. Surely, it's better to go to the sea when you come to Croatia in the summertime, but if you decide to stay in Zagreb during the summer, then do not miss Jarun. This lake is a place with many purposes - it serves as a promenade, a resort, a sports center (for many water sports - primarily rowing), a recreation area, but also a place where the INmusic Festival is held each June. Viewed from the air, Jarun Lake has a form of a musical note, so it's kind of logical to be the place where music festivals take place. Festival INmusic is held on an island in the middle of the lake, which makes it special.

A sports venue

Lake Jarun was the venue of the Summer Universiade in 1987, when the area was enriched with a sports center, and when most of the sports facilities were built. Today, Jarun Lake is a hub for athletes from Zagreb and other parts of Croatia, where they can train and prepare for big competitions. Let's say that the rowing path is one of the most famous in the world.

Lake Jarun is a special oasis of peace and nature in the city of Zagreb. Your visit to Zagreb shouldn't only include the unique museums and party streets (such as Tkalčićeva), but also a bit of nature. Lake Jarun and its six islands are the right place to relax from the city hustle and bustle.
