Lastovo: the greenest island of the Adriatic Sea

Lastovo is a small archipelago in the Adriatic Sea, a tiny paradise on earth. Lastovo is the name of the island, the city and the nature park. It consists of 46 islands and has a hidden harbor. It is located in Croatia in Dubrovnik-Neretva County. In Italian, it is called Lagosta and in German Augusta. Welcome to Lastovo, the greenest and most peaceful island of the Adriatic Sea.

Although it is located near Korčula, Mljet, and Hvar, Lastovo has started receiving more visits of tourists only recently.  The island is covered by forest, over 60 percent of the surface. A big part of the island belongs to the Nature Park of Lastovo. Lastovo does not have a large population. Only a few hundred people live on it permanently. Tourism and agriculture are the two main sources of income. As the island has thousands of sunny hours per year, there are plenty of vineyards here. The locals are trying hard to make your stay as beautiful as possible.

A walking adventure

To the island of Lastovo it is only possible to arrive with ferryboats from Split and from the nearby island of Korčula or Hvar. The ferry will drop you in the port of Ubli. And from here, you can start your walking adventure. You need only a few hours to visit the whole island. Hiking is the best form of getting to know and makin a connection with the island. From the village of Ubli, you will head to the place Zaklopatica. Here, like everywhere on the island, you will be impressed by the beautiful dense forests and the crystal blue color of the sea. Small and large bays, walls, waves, the scent of the forest and the sound of silence - pure completeness. In this small place, you can have lunch and continue to the town of Lastovo.

Lastovo is a small town. The whole town seemed to have been built of stone of the same rock. The island of Lastovo is fairly plain, the highest "peak" is only 400 m above the sea level. In the town of Lastovo, it is nice to see the parish Church of St. Cosmas and Damian from the 14th century. And there is a tourist information center for all your questions and doubts. From Lastovo, you have to go to Lučica where blue and green melt together and create a perfect combination of colors and shapes that only nature can make.

From Lastovo, you can head towards Skrivena luka (hidden port), which is a beautiful little bay that looks like a harbor. In this part of the island, the beaches are made of fine stone and gravel. The sea is crystal clear, and the water is usually warm because Lastovo belongs to the sunniest islands of the Adriatic Sea. After swimming and enjoying the sun, you can go back west to the town of Ubli, from where the ferry will return you to your starting destination. Or you can sleep and stay for another day. Lastovo is known for its not expensive accommodation. In addition, it is also possible to camp on the island itself.
