The beach of Playa Grande is part of the Las Baulas National Marine Park in the Guanacate Province, near Nosara. Las Baulas is an ecological sanctuary protecting Costa Rica's most important nesting site of leatherback sea turtles. The beach of Playa Grande is a miles-long crescent of fine, pale sand lined by coastal vegetation and was named one of the top beaches in the world for viewing wildlife by Travel and Leisure. This 5 km stretch of beach is home to the 2nd largest nesting site for Leatherback sea turtles in the entire world. Construction in Playa Grande is set back from the beach to conserve the shoreline and to diminish night lights on the beach. Local residents and businesses must shield their lights so as not to deter or confuse nesting females or hatchlings. After sundown no visitors are allowed on the beach, unless they are accompanied by a park guide. © Flickr/Jason Bradley
