El Castillo Hidalgo is a building located on the top of Cerro Santa Lucía, in the city of Santiago, Chile. It was built in 1816 by order of the Governor of Chile during the Reconquest, Casimiro Marcó del Pont, for the defense of the city, with the name of Battery Santa Lucía. The design and engineering works of the fort or castle were under the direction of the Brigadier of the Royal Corps of Engineers Manuel Olaguer Feliú. After the country's independence, it took the name of Manuel Hidalgo, captain fallen in the Battle of Chacabuco. ©Istock/Marcela Vieira
