Karangetang is an active volcano in Siau Island, North Sulawesi. Its last large eruption was in 2018, but it retains some activity up until now. Whenever the volcanic activity is mild enough, Karangetang can be climbed. At other times, it is better to watch the natural fireworks from below, although viscous lava flows, sometimes reaching the sea, can usually be approached with a reasonable degree of safety. © Mark Levitin
