Naples wins the contest for the longest Christmas market. In the historic city centre are the narrow alleyways of San Gregorio Armeno, nicknamed ‘Christmas Alley’ for the year-round stalls run by Neapolitan artisans, who make and sell wooden cribs, nativity scenes and statuettes (an important trade handed down for generations). Of course, come Christmas (8 December is the city’s traditional start of the season) the festivities move up a gear. The addition of lights, food and extra stalls make things even busier and more exciting.
