The Municipal Arts and Crafts Market (Mercado de Artesania) in downtown San Jose is always a “must go” stop for nationals and foreigners looking for high-quality, affordable souvenirs. This is the market where the Costa Rican craftsmen show and sell crafts that are mostly made and decorated by hand. Beautiful souvenirs such as jewelry, candies, bags, leather items, paintings and framed flowers and butterflies, coffee cups, traditional Costa Rican carretas (ox carts) and coffee makers (choreadores), T-shirts, caps, and many more decorative items to remind you of your trip to Costa Rica. Costa Rican handcrafted hammocks and rocking chairs are popular products. The Handicraft Market is in downtown San Jose, located on the side of the "Plaza de la Democracia". Note: It’s best to have local currency. Just as with any other country you visit, ensure your safety by not carrying or flashing large amounts of cash or jewelry, and be aware of your belongings. Keep your handbag closed. The police are always patrolling, but better safe than sorry. It’s usually open from 08:30 am to 5:00 pm everyday. © Flickr/Slava Petrov
