A Glimpse into the Past

The museum is housed in the former Bull factory, which played a significant role in the development of mechanography in France. The Compagnie des Machines Bull took over the factory in 1960 after the closure of the DMC textile factory. With a workforce of up to 2,500 employees, Bull became a leading manufacturer of electromechanical machines and computer peripherals.

Before the advent of electronics and microchips, mechanography relied on the use and processing of punched cards. At the Musée de la Mécanographie, you can witness the evolution of this technology through a collection of restored machines that were once at the forefront of progress.

Explore the Exhibits

The museum showcases a range of fascinating machines that were integral to the mechanography process. The journey begins with the perforator (PELROD), which, as the name suggests, punched holes in the cards. Next is the translator (TRAD 80), followed by the sorter (E12), which organized cards into specific orders or files.

To complete the process, the interclasser (INTER B) read, compared, organized, separated, and ordered the cards within a file. Finally, the tabulator (BS120) read the data, performed calculations, and printed the results. This impressive machine held the world record for printing speed for 15 years, from 1932 to 1947, at an impressive 150 lines per minute.

In addition to the mechanography machines, the museum also features input and output peripherals, including the famous MATHILDE printer. Developed in Belfort in 1985, MATHILDE was the first commercially available magnetic printer.
