Museo Etnografico di Oppido Lucano

The Ethnographic Museum was inaugurated in Oppido Lucano on August 11, 2011. Conceived by Prof. Francesco Casale, socio-cultural association "The Holly" and the Town Council. Ideally the space of a farmhouse and agricultural activities and crafts of the past, thanks to the private collection of Prof. Casale and collaboration of many citizens who have offered their items have been rebuilt. This material has found a temporary arrangement in 1995 in the premises of the State Professional for Agriculture and the Environment "Giustino Fortunato" Lagopesole; in 2003 some of the objects were exhibited at Palazzo Lanfranchi Matera on the occasion of the exhibition "Material culture and ethnographic collections in Basilicata." The Oppido Lucano museum consists of objects and tools used in the prevailing community activities: agriculture, herding and crafts in general. The first room is devoted almost exclusively to agriculture: there are various types of plow, pet collars, different types of sickles, sieves and a corn sheller machine; a corner is reserved to the equipment used in the production of sheep's milk and cheese. In the second room there are the utensils of different artisans crafts: there is the angle of the blacksmith, the coppersmith, the carpenter, the mason and shoemaker. The farmhouse is set up and decorated with a fairly faithful reproduction of what was once the home of the farmer. This consisted of a single room that served as kitchen, bedroom and almost always as stable. Also there is the presence of a corner dedicated to the bibliographical material of Oppido Lucano.
