In 1979 the building passed to the Ministry of Culture as ethnographic section of the Archaeological Museum of Ourense and as such opens to the public on 18 May 1986. On 29 March 1993 the Ministry of Culture and Youth grants legal status to independent museum modifying its name, which happens to be definitely Ethnological museum. The headquarters of the museum is the former home-Palace of the Marquis de Bahamonde (Baamonde) belonging to the nobility of recent origin bourgeois born in the nineteenth.
