The National History Museum of Moldova is among the most important museum institutions in the Republic of Moldova, both in terms of its patrimony and of the scientific prestige. The permanent exhibition of the museum is designed and carried out by a group of specialists who chose a presentation based on a rigorous scientific theme, according to the chronological-thematic criterion, on historical epochs, supported by the evocative force of the exhibits, the original testimonies of the historical heritage archaeological museum. The space for the exhibition has an area of 1700 m.p. and is used optimally, respecting all the preservation and security requirements of the museum heritage.

The act of establishing the history museum is dated December 21, 1983, when the order of the Ministry of Culture no. 561 "Regarding the reprofilation of museums" (based on the Joint Decision of the Communist Party of the PCM and the Council of Ministers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of 29 November 1983 "On the use of the historical monument - the building of the former boys' gymnasium in Chisinau where S. Lazo learned" ).

The State History Museum of the MSS was created on the basis of the Republican Museum of Military Glory, which it has incorporated, and the historical-historical play fund owned by the State Museum of History and Studies of the National Land of the MSSR. Its location remained in the historical building undergoing restoration of the former boys' gymnasium no. 1 in Chisinau, where the Republican Military Glory Museum was located.

On 22 October 1991, by Order of the Ministry of Culture no. 231 "On the improvement of the activity of republican museums", the State Museum of History of the Moldovan Museum of History changes its title in the National History Museum of Moldova.

In 2006, according to the Government Decision of the Republic of Moldova no. 1326 of December 14, 2005 "On measures to optimize the infrastructure of the sphere of science and innovation", the National Museum of History of Moldova was reorganized by absorbing the Archeology Museum of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova in the National Archeology and History Museum Moldova.

Currently, the National Museum of Archeology and History of Moldova is subordinated to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Moldova, its scientific activity being coordinated by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova.

The heritage of the museum, originally made up of the Military Glory Museum and history collections of the State Museum of History and Study of the Natal Land, has been enriched year after year with increasingly significant pieces of work and a true scientific value through research, donations and acquisitions. The growth and diversification of heritage also contributed to massive patrimony transfers from a number of abolished museums - the Republican Museum of Peoples' Friendship, the PCM History Museum, the Republican Museum of Comsomol History, Republican Museum "G. I. Kotovski and S. Gh. Lazo ", the Republican History Museum of Religion, the Bulgarian Volunteer Memorial Museum and the Archeology Museum of the ASM.

Today, the National Museum of Archeology and History of Moldova owns 322172 pieces of heritage, whose diverse typology surmounts Moldova's profile over the centuries, from prehistoric times to the present, attesting the human habitat, facts, events, portraits of personalities.

In 1991, the first permanent history exhibition "Multimilenery History Pages" was opened to the public, covering the historical period from the earliest times until 1940. It was made in 3 upstairs rooms with an area of 930 square meters, displaying about 900 museum pieces. The exhibition illustrated the specificity of the development of the territory between Nistru and Prut in the context of the history of the medieval state of Moldova. After the dismemberment of Moldova in 1812, the territorial area of representation was limited to Bessarabia.

In 1997, the permanent history exhibition is restored, both in terms of content and space of exposure, and of how it is presented. It was extended throughout the first floor in 6 rooms with an area of 1400 m.p. The historical discourse of the exhibition takes place from the Paleolithic until the end of the fifth decade of the 20th century.

In 2006-2007, the Museum was in a new process of restoration of the permanent exhibition, radical changes in terms of vision and the exhibits fund supporting the prehistory and ancient history. At the base of these changes were the collections transferred from the former Archeology Museum of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. Of course, the current form of the permanent exhibition is an intermediate one. At present, conceptual and thematic work is being done on the new vision of the exhibition of the National Museum of Archeology and History of Moldova.

In August 1990, on the ground floor of the museum, the diorama of the Iasi-Chisinau operation was opened, and in 1994, on the semi-basement, the noble metal exhibition - "Thesaurus" was opened.

The museum offers large audiences and temporary exhibitions, diverse in thematic and museological aspect, which complement the deficiencies of the permanent exhibition and contribute to the cultural propaganda of the deposited heritage. In the 28 years of its existence, the museum organized around 189 temporary exhibitions (at the headquarters, outside the institution and abroad), focusing on their own collections as well as on cooperation with other cultural and research institutions.
