Paintball is a sport born in the USA in the early eighties. The aim of the game is to eliminate the opponent by hitting him with gelatin balls filled with brightly colored paint, shoot through special air guns called markers. Given the speed of impact, the capsule of the bullet breaks the contact with the target, releasing the contents on the opponent's suit. Once marked by a "paintball", a player is eliminated, and to return to wait a predetermined time or the beginning of the next game.

Paintball has similarities with another war simulation game, the Team, using weapons that shoot plastic bullets, and that mimic the real ones; the two games, however, are also very different in many other respects (including the game strategies).

Emerged in the early eighties, paintball quickly became popular, especially in the US and has gathered a large group of participants around the world. The matches can take place inside of buildings or areas specifically closed and delimited or outside, in many different ways. There are no specific rules for playing paintball, leaving the objectives, strategies and imagination of players playing techniques and soil conditions. The sport uses many different types of equipment and has developed its own vocabulary to describe "moves" and special situations.

Contrary to appearances, if the safety rules are respected paintball is one of the safest sports, having an accident rate of 0.02 for exposure, very inferior to other less dangerous judged sports, such as football. Critical for safety, it is the use of a protective mask that covers the face because of the composition and the speed of pellet output, which can cause injury to the face.

As reported by those who are considered the inventors of the sport, Bob Gurnsey, Hayes Noel and Charles Gaines, the first game of paintball was played in New Hampshire in 1981 using the paint markers used to mark trees for felling and little by little this game caught on and spread throughout the world. The first tournaments with cash prizes have been held since 1983.
