Since 1977, the Parco dei Colli di Bergamo takes care of about 4,700 hectares, an area situated between 244 and 1146 meters above sea level, trying to protect and enhance the delicate balance between nature and human presence. For its size it is the third regional park after those of Ticino and Groane. The park is developed on Almé municipalities, Bergamo, Mozzo, Paladina, Ponteranica, Ranica, Sorisole, Torre Boldone, Valbrembo and Villa d'Almé. A territory which is surprising for the mix of landscape and man-made constructions. Preciousness botanical alternating with ancient monuments, from the Monte Canto Alto to the historical town of Bergamo Alta. The Park was elected by 5,000 animal and plant species as their habitat: more than 400 species of plants, 40 mammals, 160 birds, 10 reptiles, 11 amphibians and 10 fish. The park has a seat on the particular historical and architectural value: the ancient Benedictine monastery of Valmarina, the twelfth century, recently restored and enhanced. There is also another headquarters, surrounded by the woods of Colle Maresana: it is called the Cà Matta and hosting environmental education initiatives.
