Victoriei Square , formerly Opera Square , is one of the central squares of Timisoara , the place where Timisoara was proclaimed on December 20, 1989, the first free city in Romania . On the opposite poles of the market are the Opera North, and the Metropolitan Cathedral at the South. From the Opera to the Cathedral, the promenade on the right is called "Corso" and the one on the left "Surogat". Both have architectural ensembles of historical importance.
