"Residenza Santa Lucia" B & B In the historical center of Galatone, a village of ancient Byzantine origin, one of the major art centers of the Terra D'Otranto, just 13 km of highway from Gallipoli and 24 of freeway from Lecce, just 8 km from the enchanting seaside resorts of Santa Maria, Santa Caterina and Porto Selvaggio, away from traffic, noise, mass tourism, embraced by the calm and relaxed life of the inhabitants of the historic center, the fulcrum of an evocative medieval and arabeggiante urban fabric, surrounded by monuments, palaces and churches ranging from 1400 to 1800, stands the B & B "Residenza Santa Lucia".

Residence of authentic authentic and typically Salento style. The building that houses the Residenza Santa Lucia is of ancient origin and is located on even older structures. It is located in the corner between the streets Ospedale and Santa Lucia, right from the Church's source, the old main parish of Galatone, which is popularly called with the name of the patron saint of sight, although actually dedicated to the Annunciation. The intersection of the Paraporti-Ospedale streets with the streets of Santa Lucia-Diaz (formerly Via del Clero) is the exact place where, in the medieval urban layout of the Byzantine castrum, the cardo maximus (north-south axis) and the decumanus maximus (east-west). The quadrivium, ennobled by the temple, was once wider. With the enlargement of the town, after the construction of the sixteenth-century walls, part of the public space that formed the square in front of the temple was alienated. In fact, the architectural part facing the streets is much more recent than the rest of the building on the ground floor, which is more backward.

Inside the ground floor there is a vast area that seems to be of medieval origin, and from the openings then buffered, it suggests that it had wide entrances on at least three sides, and lighting windows. Over time the development of building around has closed many of these openings. It is clearly noted that from an original gabled roof it was then passed to a barrel vault. Noteworthy are the elements in Lecce stone that hold the architraves.

A room so big, so bright as it was and with so large entrances, and located right in the middle of the center of the village walled in 1300, would suggest an ancient use of meeting room, a city seat, in short. Then it was downgraded to a storage room and a stable when the new sixteenth-century urban needs placed the main square elsewhere. The seats were noble councils present in the ancient Kingdom of Naples and in the capital itself of Naples. Even today, the ancient denomination "Piazza del Sedile" remains in the southern Italian, referring to the location, or even the permanence of the building itself, of the architectural structure that housed the citadino noble council. Just like in Galatone, where the 16th century structure of the Sedile is conserved in piazza Costadura, now covered in liberty style, but with the interior of an original structure, characterized by the characteristic large ogival cross vault with ribs, placed next to the eighteenth-century tower of the civic clock.

The structure on the first floor of the Residenza Santa Lucia, however, dates back to the early twentieth century. During the restoration work, various upgrades and modifications were noted. The last renovation was made starting from the second decade of the 21st century, slavishly respecting the spirit of the genius loci, bringing back to the ancient sober simplicity the old bourgeois residence. On the first floor, accessing the original ancient door to the old staircase, you reach the large common room, where year access three rooms:

  • The Levante suite. In the corner between via Santa Lucia and via Ospedale it overlooks the Levante suite, composed of two vaulted rooms "alla leccese", and a bathroom with shower accessible from the entrance hallway. From the balcony on Via Ospedale you can enjoy the perspective view of the ancient Via del Clero, today Armando Diaz. In addition to the double bed in the main bedroom with two large windows there are two beds in the adjoining room, always with a balcony.
  • The Scirocco residence. Inside is the Scirocco residence, formed by two rooms that take light from above. Very quiet and peaceful, cool in summer and warm in winter, with fireplace in the room and a comfortable bathroom. In addition to the master bedroom the adjoining room allows you to accommodate a cot or a cot.
  • The Ponente residence. Always overlooking Via Ospedale, the Ponente residence is characterized by a large room with a vaulted ceiling, and a charming bathroom with a lowered barrel vault. The spaciousness of the room allows you to have, in addition to the double bed, also two more single beds. On the attic floor, reachable through an evocative brick staircase with vintage "cementine" tiles, you reach the Tramontana suite. Characterized by a kitchen at the entrance, where you can also cook independently, through a suggestive alternation of stairs you reach the large room for two / four beds served by a comfortable bathroom, and enriched by a very large open terrace with a striking view on the front of the Church and on the roofs of the historical center of the village. A view that still offers even more extensive if you climb the roof, one of the highest places in the ancient city of Galatone.

The furnishing of the residences, taken care of with taste and simplicity, is embellished with many original antique pieces of local ebonist art of the nineteenth and twentieth century.

A few steps from the Residenza Santa Lucia the Teatro Comunale, just restored. So just a few meters away is the Trattoria and pizzeria Sascianne, from the typical cuisine offered in ancient rooms, or on the beautiful terrace where in summer you can taste the excellent pizzas. Very close to the Residenza il Forno Desideria, which in the morning warms up traditional semolina bread, "Pucce" (bread seasoned with olives or other), "Pitte" (focaccie) of potatoes and pasta, local wheat friselle, barley and cereals, biscuits and traditional baked pastries, all cooked in olive wood in an ancient stone oven dating back to 1600.

For a great coffee, or a delicious expressive or cappuccino artistically decorated by the friendly Salvatore, and a delicious breakfast of pasticciotti leccese and fragrant croissants, there is a short walk the Bar Movida, right next to the Arch of San Sebastiano, the surviving eighteenth-century urban door that for centuries has entered the heart of the village of Galatone or the Garden bar where you can enjoy delicious pasticciotti and croissants.
