A Historical Marvel

Commissioned by Prince Alessandro Torlonia in 1832, the Serra Moresca was designed by the Venetian architect Giuseppe Jappelli. Completed in 1841, this magnificent structure was intended to house exotic and rare plants, as well as serve as a venue for extravagant events. The architectural style of the Serra Moresca draws inspiration from the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, with its intricate polychrome glass, iron, and cast iron features.

Architectural Features

As you step inside the Serra Moresca, you'll be greeted by a grand hall adorned with large windows framed with cast iron and colored glass. The walls are sumptuously decorated with polychrome stucco, adding to the visual allure of the space. One fascinating feature of the building is a semi-hidden compartment for an orchestra, highlighting its multifunctional design.

Step into the Moorish Tower

Adjacent to the Serra Moresca is the Moorish Tower, a place reserved for the prince's most intimate gatherings. The tower boasts a dining room on its top floor, where a select few were invited to indulge in sumptuous meals. The tower's large windows and elegant peperino structure offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Explore the Nymphae Loci

Between the Serra Moresca and the Moorish Tower, Jappelli created an artificial cave known as the Nymphae Loci. Although some of its original wooden and stucco structures no longer exist, the remaining elements, such as suspended ponds and wooden paths, provide a glimpse into the past. This area was designed to surprise and amaze visitors with its waterfalls, lakes, and lush vegetation.

Visit and Opening Hours

The Serra Moresca is now part of the Museums of Villa Torlonia, which also include the Casina delle Civette and Casino Nobile. The museum offers a captivating journey through history and nature, with the Serra Moresca serving as a highlight of the experience.

The Serra Moresca is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday. From April to September, the opening hours are from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, and from October to March, the opening hours are from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Please note that the last entrance is 40 minutes before closing time. The Serra Moresca is closed on Mondays, as well as on May 1st and December 25th. It is also closed during the months of July and August.
