Tjarnarbíó

Tjarnarbíó is located in the heart of Reykjavík. The house was built in 1913 and was operated as an apartment house until 1942 when it was converted into a cinema. In 1995, the Association of Independent Theater, SL, began the operation of Tjarnarbíó by the Reykjavík Sports and Recreation Council and has run the house for the past eleven years for the city of Reykjavík. The premises have been rented for all kinds of activities. Mainly for workgroups, but also entertainment groups, high school, student shows and concert venues. Likewise, film shows have been increasing over the past few years.

The independent theaters have managed to run Tjarnarbíó on behalf of the city of Reykjavík as in recent years. SL has assigned to the Cultural Association of Tjarnarbíó the operation of the premises on its behalf.

Tjarnarbíó reopened after the refurbishment of the city of Reykjavík on 1 October 2010.

March 29, 2014, Tjarnarbíó officially opened after review of operations. Now it operates a center of creation, with workshops for artists of various kinds, which open their work for visitors and walking. Then have opened a cozy cafe with a gorgeous bar, open until tonight.
