Mount Athos, a unique male monastic society

Mount Athos is a mountain of Greece located in Macedonia, at the end of the Aktè, of which it constitutes the highest point with 2,030 meters of altitude.

It is famous for the twenty Orthodox monasteries established on its flanks and in the vicinity since the tenth century. This theocratic community is organized in the monastic Republic of Mount Athos, which derives its name from the mountain and which enjoys a certain degree of internal autonomy within the Hellenic Republic.
