A quick walk here will be enough to make you understand why, in Moorish times, Cordoba was regarded as a rival to the splandours of Constantinople, Damascus and Baghdad. Cordoba's period of greatest glory began in the 8th century, when some 300 mosques and innumerable palaces and public buildings were built.
