Locorotondo is located in the heart of the Itria Valley. The name of the village, meaning “round place,” refers to the structure of the historical center. Upon arriving in the old town of Locorotondo, you can see the circular shape that the attached, white houses form. While the 14 000 – inhabitant town is not major traction for tourists or particularly famous, it is still among the most scenic places in the southern-Italian region. In fact, it is part of the official organization “The most beautiful villages in Italy” (I Borghi più Belli d’Italia). This institution aims to preserve widely unknown villages with important historical heritage and great authenticity.

Locorotondo is just a short 15-minute drive from Alberobello, the famous town of the Trulli. Since Alberobello is undoubtedly a must-visit when in Apulia, it is an excellent opportunity to explore Locorotondo on the same day. Even though the majority often overlooks it, tourists who have been there often described it as the town with the most beautiful historic center. Unlike Alberobello, there are hardly any souvenir shops, and the old town is uniquely authentic and charming. Particularly appealing are the narrow white streets with lovely decorated entrances. The inhabitants take great care of their little front gardens, and during the warmer months, the streets and balconies are blooming with all different kinds of flowers and plants.

But also during winter, Locorotondo is worth visiting. While almost all cities in Apulia have festive ornaments, the little town is truly special. The small alleys are decorated with plenty of illuminated Christmas streets and spectacular light ceilings.

Since the city is located on a hill, it offers spectacular panoramic views just along the streets of the historical center. The surrounding area is full of nature, fields, olive trees, and a few Trulli houses – perfectly representing the characteristics of the Apulian countryside.

As usual in Italy, the culinary part also plays an essential role in the cultural identity of the town. The small round town is known for its own sparkling white wine, called Locorotondo DOP. While you will be able to find it in the majority of the supermarkets and wineries in south Italy – don’t miss out on the chance to taste the local wine directly at its origin.

No matter what season you choose for your visit – the authentic and delightful atmosphere of the town is experienceable all-year-round.
