I honestly don’t know of many places that claim to be the center of the world. Indeed, it could be everywhere; it's about your point of view and imagination. For me, the center of the world is in a small town in the north of Croatia - in Ludbreg. In Ludbreg, you will find great food, greeting locals, churches full of interesting stories but also one unique fountain. Let's go then!

About Ludbreg

Ludbreg is a small town in Croatia, in Varaždin County. The town has a population of about 8,500, but the amount of visitors dramatically outnumbers the number of citizens. This is due to the town's unofficial title - the center of the world. Ludbreg also boasts a long and continuous history of existence itself, as this place has been mentioned in both local historical writings and Roman sources. Ever since the beginning of the new era, Ludbreg has been continuously inhabited,  cradled in a beautiful landscape.

Centrum Mundi

Everyone is entitled to create fairytales and reimagine their own history. For this small town, it is all about the urban legend that it is the center of the world. Curiously, the measurements have identified the international cities that are located on the pattern of concentric circles, starting from one center - in Ludbreg. The central square in Ludbreg is dedicated to the center of the world as well as the day of the "Center of the World" which is celebrated every April 1st. For that special day, you can enjoy the central square where the principal fountain is transformed into the wine fountain. On this occasion, the city notary can also issue you evidence that you are a citizen of the center of the world. In case I got you with the wine, Riesling and Graševina are the most famous and the best wines coming from this region.

The central cobblestone town square becomes richer each year for tiles with the cities located in concentric circles around Ludbreg as the center. In the first round are the neighbors Varaždin, Čakovec, and Koprivnica.

Religious tourism

In the early 15th century, a Eucharistic miracle occurred in Ludbreg, in the chapel of the castle - a priest, during the mass, saw the real blood running from the host (an altar bread). A century later, this miracle was confirmed by Pope Leo X. Today, we have a Testament Chapel - the Sanctuary of the Precious Blood of Christ as a reminder, which is important on the map of all religious tourists. The ampoule with the holiest blood of Christ is kept in the parish church in Ludbreg.

Ludbreg is in a great position and is well connected with the capital of Zagreb, but also with the neighboring countries - Slovenia and Hungary. The nearby Varaždin,  Koprivnica, and Čakovec are only about 30 minutes away by car. From Zagreb, you can reach the place by the modern highway in about 50 minutes. So, there are no excuses not to come! Welcome to the center of the world, located in Croatia, welcome to Ludbreg.
