National park made of 140 islands – Kornati

1 minutes to read
As is the number of days in a year, so is the number of the Kornati islands

This story we will begin with this old saying. And it's like that. National park Kornati has numerous islands - small ones and big ones. Since 1980. Kornati islands are officially national park in Croatia. Islands don't have permanent inhabitants but daily and season migrations are big.

Located in Šibenik-Knin county, in the middle of Adriatic sea, Kornati islands are very specific. Actually this archipelago represents the densest one in the Mediterranean - 140 islands on 320 square kilometers. Fan fact is that only 5% of the surface of those islands is covered with some kind plants - trees are rear on the most of those islands. Constant deforestation leak of the water in the islands soil and above all karst-limestone terrain made those islands look"naked' and maybe scary when you are approaching them. My impression is that Kornati islands are like small volcanoes rising from the water - if a were a little boy drawing them on the paper.

For diving fans and for sailing fans Kornati islands are paradise. When diving you will be able to see interesting algae, sea sponges and corals besides different kind of fish. Every year thousands of sailors come to visit and feel the wind of the Kornati isles. Sailing season is from May to October. Kornati islands are perfect for sailing for it's proximity one from another and because of great wind. Sunsets are one of the most beautiful on the Adriatic sea.

When traveling to Kornati islands you can approach them from Zadar and from Šibenik side. Both cities are well connected with Croatian mainland and Dalmatian coastal cities.
